California establishes a 10 mph prima facie speed limit for electric bicycles operated on sidewalks. Local authorities may also establish posted speed limits on bicycle paths and multiuse trails as permitted by California law.
Electric bicycles, batteries, and related electrical systems sold in California must comply with applicable California electrical and battery safety requirements, including applicable testing and safety standards.
Electric bicycles must not be modified or tampered with in a manner that causes the bicycle to no longer meet the requirements applicable to an electric bicycle or its designated class.
Riders are responsible for complying with all applicable state and local laws and should check local regulations before riding.
